The Municipality of Guimarães is currently preparing the application procedure to be European Green Capital in 2020. For this purpose, the municipality created a Mission Structure, which includes an External Advisory Committee (CEA). The committee will be responsible for advisory and scientific validation tasks, particularly by following up the strategy implementation and working papers.
Scheduled to meet twice a year, the CEA is formed by a group of national and international personalities of renowned intellectual, academic and scientific merit. The Dean of the EEUM, João Monteiro, was invited to be part of the committee. Professor João Monteiro already attended the public presentation ceremony of the project “Guimarães + Verde” (Greener Guimarães).
“Count on me!” is the slogan of Guimarães’ application to European Green Capital. The logo, which evokes the colours of nature and resembles a flower, was created from the combination of the graphic sign “Plus” with the form of a leaf, multiplied by four, in juxtaposition as a cross.
For the next two years, operational teams will implement environmental good practices identified in a global action plan. The application will be formalized in 2017 following a process which demands that indicators in twelve areas are fulfilled: Climate change: mitigation and adaptation; Local transport; Green urban areas incorporating sustainable land use; Nature and biodiversity; Ambient air quality; Quality of the acoustic environment; Waste production and management; Water management; Waste water treatment; Eco innovation and sustainable employment; Energy performance; and Integrated environmental management.
